To keep GroupWise® operating efficiently, you
should periodically perform maintenance tasks. We recommend that you regularly
perform the Analyze/Fix Databases action with the Fix Problems option selected.
This detects and repair problems as they occur. Normally, you do not need to
select the Contents and Index Check options.
You should also
run Analyze/Fix any time users experience problems with their user,
message, or library databases.
GroupWise Objects
Select Post Offices, Libraries or Users/Resources, then select the post office,
library, user, or resource for which you want to perform maintenance. If the
post office, library, user, or resource you want does not appear in the GroupWise
Objects list, click Close. Select the post office, library, user, or resource
in the ConsoleOne® browser window, then click Tools > GroupWise Utilities > Mailbox/Library
Maintenance.
Object Type
Allows you to select the objects you want to maintain. You can run the Analyze/Fix
Databases action on a post office, for a specific user or resource, or for a
library. If you select a post office, all users and resources in the post office
are checked, although you can use the Exclude tab to exclude specific users
and resources in a post office. You can run the Analyze/Fix Databases action
for one or more selected libraries, or for all libraries in one or more selected
post offices.
Action: Analyze/Fix Databases
Select Analyze/Fix Databases to look for problems and errors in the user, message,
and document databases. When you select Analyze/Fix Databases, you can choose
from the available options.
Structure
Whenever a user experiences a problem related to the user, message, or library databases, you should perform a structure check. The structure check verifies the integrity of the databases and reports the amount of space that could be recovered. If there is a structural problem, the databases are rebuilt with free space reclaimed. If there is no structural problem, you can use the Expire/Reduce option to recover any available space.
Index Check
If you select Structure, you can also select Index Check. An index check is advisable when a user tries to open a message and gets a read error, or if sent items that show a delivered status in the Properties window do not appear in the recipient's mailbox. An index check can be time-consuming.
Contents
Instructs Mailbox/Library Maintenance to analyze references to other items. For example, in the user database, Mailbox/Library Maintenance verifies that any messages referenced actually exist in the message databases. In the message database, Mailbox/Library Maintenance verifies that any attachments referenced actually exist in the attachment directories.
For libraries, a contents check verifies index synchronization between the libraries and corresponding post offices.
A contents check also makes sure rules, distribution lists, and personal groups point to valid objects.
Collect Statistics
Collects and displays statistics about the post office, such as the number of messages and appointments in the post office and the average number of each per user. It is valid only for user databases.
Collect Statistics is used in conjunction with the Contents option and is dimmed until you click Contents.Attachment File Check
Verifies the structure of attachment files. This can be a very time-consuming process.
Fix Problems
Fixes any problems found by the Mailbox/Library Maintenance program. Otherwise, Mailbox/Library Maintenance analyzes the databases and reports problems it finds to the GroupWise administrator.
Update User Disk Space Totals
Recalculates the total disk space a GroupWise user is using by reading the selected user mailboxes and updating the poll record used for disk space management. Because disk space is user specific, the program calculates the amount of disk space in use by the user in the user.db, in any of the message databases, and in the attachment directory. Disk space limitations do not take into account the disk space used in document libraries. This option is usually run if the user totals are not being reflected correctly.User disk space totals are available only for users of GroupWise 6 and above.
Tab Options
The Databases, Logging, Results, Misc, and
Exclude tabs let you specify database types and logging options.
Databases
Select the type of database that you want to run Mailbox/Library Maintenance options against. You can choose either a user, message, or document database.User
Each user on a post office has a user database (userxxx.db where xxx is the user's file ID) located in the ofuser directory. The user database stores the user's setup information, personal groups, rules, and other information specific to the user. It also contains references to the user's messages in the message databases.Message
Messages in a post office are stored in the message databases (msgnn.db) in the ofmsg directory.Document
Document databases store documents and all related document information in database files located under the post_office_ID\gwdms\lib0-FF directories.Logging
To log information to a file, enter a filename. By default, the file is created in the po\wpcsout\ofs directory, where po is the post office directory.Log File
Enter a new name for the log file, or accept the default name.Verbose Logging
Verbose Logging produces maximum detail; however, this option creates very large log files and slows execution. Results
Select Administrator to send the results to the user defined as the GroupWise domain administrator. Select Individual Users to send each user the results that pertain to his or her GroupWise user account. The CC area is a comma-delimited field used to list additional users who will receive the report. The Message button displays a text area where you can send a message.Misc
Support options are typically obtained from Novell® Support representatives when you need assistance resolving specific database problems. Some information about commonly used options is available in the Support Knowledgebase. Make sure that you clearly understand what the Support options do before you use them.Exclude
Lists any individual or resource you want to exclude from the Mailbox/Library Maintenance tasks.
Run
Executes the GroupWise Mailbox/Library Maintenance options you have selected.
Retrieve
Use Retrieve to browse to and select an options file. The default file name
is gwckrun.opt.
Save
Saves the currently selected options. By default, the options file is saved
to the domain\wptools directory, where domain is the domain directory
to which you are currently connected.
